Who am I?

I’m Aaron, and I’m obsessed with music.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been thumbing through record collections, recording music off the radio onto cassette, building CD collections, and, in the age of MP3s, infecting several PCs with viruses trying to get the new Linkin Park single. Both listening to and making music have been a huge part of my life, and I can never see that coming to an end.

I also love writing. For almost a decade, I ran my own gaming and nerd culture publication before taking a long, much-needed break. A few years later, I felt my writing skills were going to waste, so I thought I’d take a stab at combining these two passions. In a time when music journalism is having a really hard time, and we’re seeing big publications having huge layoffs, I feel the humble music blog could be having its moment again.

thisisnotavirus.zip is the home for my thoughts on music from across the rock, metal, and indie spectrum. From Midwest emo, Metalcore, Indietronica, Math rock, Deathcore, Bedroom pop, to Post-hardcore, Progressive metal, Emo-pop, and everything in between, I’ll happily take a listen and give my opinion. As someone who listens to A LOT of music as well as writes, produces, and plays music, I feel I can offer a unique perspective on music.

In addition to the blog, I’m also the host of The Hard Drive, a fortnightly radio show live on Burton Radio where I play a mix of music I love. One week we might have mid-00s mall screamo, the next, a mix of metalcore and deathcore. These shows are then available to stream on Mixcloud.
