Static Dress – Injury Episode Review

After a four-year wait, Static Dress is back with Injury Episode, their follow-up to Rouge Carpet Disaster, which continues the band’s explosion onto the scene, but can this album stand up to their impressive debut and maintain the band’s impressive trajectory?

Static Dress have weirdly been a band I’ve always struggled to really get into, and I’m not sure why. On paper, they have every ingredient that I enjoy, but they’ve always failed to make a lasting impression on me. As far as Mall Screamo goes, Static Dress ticks all the right boxes; they’re aggressive, screamy, and raw, with massive choruses you can sing along to. They remind me a lot of bands like A Static Lullaby, Alexisonfire, and Underoath, but for me, they just never stuck.

Injury Episode, I hoped, would change that by continuing to pummel my ears with 00s-inspired emo riffs and catchy choruses, and in some respects it does. There are some fantastic songs on this album, and some great hooks, too. At times, though, it can be a little too much; a lot all at once, and it’s a little suffocating – not in a good way.

I think that’s the reason why Static Dress fails to click for me. It’s an onslaught of gritty riffs and explosive screams that at times feel like a wall of noise. The production on Injury Episode may be to blame, as some songs push the limiter, causing clipping that at times had me wondering whether my audio setup was playing up.

Maybe that’s a stylistic choice here; Static Dress have always been pushing that almost demo-like harsh sound, but honestly I found it a little off-putting.

There are some standout tracks on Injury Episode, one of my favourites being the final track of the album. Treading is, for me, a definitive Mall Screamo post-hardcore affair. Instrumentally, it’s catchy, but where it really catches me is with the chorus; vocalist Olli Appleyard has managed to hit that harmony that makes the hairs stand up on my neck. It’s probably my favourite track from the album.

Static Dress have managed to gain an impressive following both from their music and how they’ve captured their audience outside of their sound. In a similar fashion to My Chemical Romance, Static Dress have created this universe around their music with video games and comic books. This is where I feel a little out of the loop, as I haven’t really immersed myself in this universe. Maybe that’s another reason why Static Dress‘s music hasn’t really stuck. I can, however, applaud the band. In a world of streaming and TikTok virality, doing something truly unique to stand out has definitely worked.

Honestly, this is an album review that has plagued me. I’ve been writing it on and off for about a month now, listening to the album several times, hoping it’ll spark something in me, but overall, aside from a handful of standout tracks, Injury Episode falls a little flat. I can tell that it’s objectively a great record; the band have without a doubt, managed to capture that mid-00s Mall Screamo sound, adding their own sound to make it truly theirs. I just can’t seem to find anything that really sticks with this album. I’m listening to it, but it’s just not sinking in.
